Jamain Patrick Anthony Grant: 25yo alleged Mid West arsonist remanded in custody after charges upgraded

A man accused of lighting a string of bushfires along a rural road in the Mid West and threatening to kill his young son has had his charges upgraded in court after an investigation by Geraldton detectives. Geraldton man Jamain Patrick Grant, 25, appeared in Northbridge Magistrates Court on Sunday morning charged with two counts of breach of duty for starting fires and threats to kill. Mr Grant reappeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link from Greenough Regional Prison where the two counts of breach of duty were discontinued and replaced with 12 new counts of wilfully lighting a fire likely to injure or damage. It’s alleged Mr Grant lit a string of fires on Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road heading out to and around Mullewa on Saturday, December 16. Police allege he lit 12 fires, which caused nearby power lines to collapse over the train line, stopping the trains running. It’s also alleged Mr Grant threatened to kill his six-year-old son. The fires were lit in the suburbs of Ambania — 50km east of Geraldton — Arrowsmith, just south of Dongara, Devils Creek, Wicherina, Tenindewa and Mullewa. More than 2000ha were burnt. Mr Grant’s bail was not considered and he is due to appear in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday, February 1.
