Geraldton art lovers will have the chance to appreciate works by the nation’s leading portrait artists next month.

One of Australia’s most prestigious art prizes, the Lester Prize, is on its way to exhibit at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery.

The 2020 competition had more than 750 entries, whittled down to 40 as shortlisted finalists.

Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was an honour to host the 2020 Lester Prize. “This is Australia’s most recognised art prize with over $80,000 in prize money and we are hosting it at GRAG for the next five weeks for all the Mid West to see,” he said.

“A majority of the finalists are from Western Australia, which may be inspiring and heartening for our creative community.
