Locals and visitors to the Mid West’s Abrolhos Islands receive boost to 4G mobile connection
Locals and visitors to the Abrolhos Islands have been able to benefit from recently completed mobile coverage improvements, according to the State and Federal governments.
In July, a small cell base station went live at East Wallabi Island, which helped improve 4G mobile coverage to the area.
It was a $242,000 investment from the State and Federal governments, as part of the Albanese Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program.
WA Regional Development Minister Don Punch said the connection upgrades would help more visitors to the Abrolhos Islands.
“This new infrastructure at East Wallabi Island will deliver better mobile connectivity for visitors to this stunning area off the Geraldton coast,” he said.
“This vital mobile telecommunications improvement will help to make the Abrolhos Islands more accessible for tourists and ensure connectivity for local operators and businesses.
“The Mobile Black Spot Program is a great example of Commonwealth-State collaboration to improve digital connectivity, boost business capacity and help close the digital divide in regional and remote communities.”
More than 1140 base stations have been delivered as part of the program across the country.
It coincides with Australia’s 3G network closure, which is set to officially switch off from Monday, October 28.
