Tenders are being called for the redevelopment of Mullewa Hospital, with the State Government saying the project had been delayed due to complications from a natural disaster.

For years the hospital in Mullewa had been flagged for upgrades, but the project was put on the backburner with the priority going to Geraldton Health Campus.

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson was in Geraldton on Wednesday to make the announcement, saying: “Building in the Mid West region was incredibly difficult over (cyclone) Seroja and COVID. This region was hit hardest by the construction challenges more than almost any other region.

“Most people will remember that when we tendered the first time for the Geraldton Health Campus, we didn’t receive any suitable tenders, because the construction market was essentially sucked up in the rebuild after Seroja.

“We have confidence that the market is now in a position where they’ll welcome the tender, and we expect to get some really good interest in the Mullewa Hospital.”

The proposed upgrades would see enhanced primary and community care facilities, multi-purpose consultation rooms, capacity for allied health, and an ambulance bay.

According to the State Government, site preparations were being completed ahead of the main works, which were set to begin later this year.

Member for Geraldton Lara Dalton said the State Government was committed to delivering the upgrades.

“The Cook Government’s commitment to providing the people of Mullewa with a contemporary facility has not wavered,” she said.

“With detailed plans completed, I’m excited to see the redevelopment move into this important new phase and look forward to sharing updates on progress in the coming months.”

Ms Sanderson confirmed an estimate of costs would be made once the tender had been awarded.
