The under 16s national basketball championships has had an influence from the Mid West, with local players competing in both the boys and girls events at the tournament.

WA Country teams took part in the carnival held in Bendigo, Victoria, over the course of last week.

The boys squad featured Max De San Miguel and Riley Fong from the Mid West, who helped their side win two of their pool games.

De San Miguel started with a bang, scoring 27 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in the side’s first game against Queensland North.

Although his output slowed in the following games, he bounced back in the final round robin game against New South Wales Metro.

Meanwhile, Fong played off the bench, but had a strong game in WA Country’s big win over Northern Territory, with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists.

While the side wasn’t able to progress through to the semi finals after falling to WA Metro in the quarter final, they were able to finish 7th after defeating Tasmania on the final day.

De San Miguel averaged 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals per game to be one of the strongest performers throughout the competition.

Fong finished with seven points, two rebounds, and two assists per game during the tournament.

The girls’ side was less successful, winning one game across the competition.

Sabha Horstman captained the side throughout the tournament, averaging 2.57 points and 3.71 rebounds per game.

However, in the side’s win over Northern Territory, Horstman had a big say with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists.

Meanwhile, Sophie Kirkpatrick came off the bench in a limited role, averaging one point and one rebound per game.
