Mid West Port Authority announce start of Eastern Breakwater Jetty construction at Geraldton Esplanade

Construction of a jetty to accommodate vessels longer than 25m at Geraldton’s esplanade is due to start shortly, with works expected to take about five months. Mid West Ports Authority has announced the start of construction for the Eastern Breakwater jetty, with fencing and infrastructure protection works already starting as contractors mobilise the site. The jetty is being constructed midway along the Geraldton esplanade and is designed to accommodate vessels greater than 25m in length. SMC Marine has been appointed construction contractor and will install the precast plank and beam, pile jetty. MWPA CEO Damian Tully said activity on the site had already started and expected that to increase over coming weeks as the project gained momentum. “This jetty will provide benefit to commercial tourism operators in the region and enhance their ability to provide tourism offerings focused on the marine environment, particularly the Abrolhos Islands,” he said. The channel and jetty design have been optimised to minimise disturbance to seagrasses and will be restricted to one vessel at a time. The approach channel provides a 100m offset from Seal Rocks and minimises interaction with sea lions as well as ships entering the commercial harbour.
