Miocevich promoted to District Court judge, leaves vacancy at Geraldton courthouse

Geraldton has a vacancy for a new permanent magistrate after Chris Miocevich was appointed to the bench of the District Court.

Attorney-General John Quigley announced Mr Miocevich’s promotion to District Court judge last week, saying his 30 years of experience as a lawyer and magistrate across WA would be invaluable in his new role.

Mr Miocevich was appointed a magistrate almost three years ago, having presided over the Barndimalgu family violence program in Geraldton.

Before that, Mr Miocevich worked with the Aboriginal Legal Service for 15 years. In 2009, he set up his own practice and provided regular pro bono legal advice to Legal Aid, the ALS and homeless outreach legal service Street Law Lawyers.

“Over the course of his career he has demonstrated an extensive commitment to ensuring the disadvantaged have access to legal advice and services,” Mr Quigley said. Mr Miocevich had managed a big caseload of criminal and civil matters and was highly regarded in the profession.

Mr Miocevich will take up his District Court appointment on August 23.

No announcement has been made about Mr Miocevich’s replacement.

However, Mr Quigley also announced the appointments of four new magistrates — Sarah Oliver, Cillian Stockdale, Matthew Holgate and Michelle Harries — to be based in regional and metropolitan locations.
