Narelle McKenzie charged over alleged involvement in scheme to bring nearly 4kg of cannabis into Geraldton

A 47-year-old woman has been charged over her alleged involvement in a drug running scheme from Perth to Geraldton after police say they found 3.8kg of cannabis in her car. Narelle Tamara McKenzie appeared via video link in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with supplying a prohibited drug and possession of stolen or unlawfully obtained property. Police allege Ms McKenzie was found with 3.8kg of cannabis and $31,000 on May 27. Ms McKenzie’s lawyer sought to vary her bail conditions, particularly her curfew, citing the birth of her daughter. However, police prosecutor Senior Constable Beau Jones disagreed, saying Ms McKenzie was fortunate to be granted bail in the first place. He said her co-accused had not been granted bail and did not apply due to the serious nature of the charges. Police also alleged they had information that it was not the first time Ms McKenzie had conducted the drug run to Geraldton. Const. Jones said the curfew was in place to reduce the risk of reoffending, as the drug runs took place at night. Magistrate Angus Hockton acknowledged the difficulties with the birth of Ms McKenzie’s daughter and agreed to amend the curfew to between 11pm and 6am. Mr Hockton said it was a moderate curfew which would enable Ms McKenzie to be there for her daughter. She is not to contact the co-accused or leave WA.
