Geraldton residents are being reminded about the importance of brain health, with a pop-up base to be set up at Northgate Shopping Centre during Brain Awareness Week.

People can visit the “pop-up brain health base” on Tuesday, March 14 from 9am to 3pm.

Neurological nurses will be available to run mini-health checks, chat about neurological health questions and provide brain health and brain training resources.

The Geraldton neurological nursing team provides health care navigation services for people of all ages living with a neurological condition or who may be showing symptoms.

Brain Awareness Week is held from March 13 to 19.

Geraldton Neurological Council CEO Etta Palumbo said the goal during the week and throughout the year was to raise awareness of people nourishing their brain by eating right, moving more and stimulating the mind.

“Brain Awareness Week is a good time to reflect on the fact that there is nothing more important than looking after your brain’s health, and that living a brain-healthy lifestyle is key to thriving over your life course,” she said.

“Cognitive decline is not a natural state as we age, we simply need to use it or lose it, and by challenging our brains and leading a healthy-brain lifestyle, we can stay sharp, happy and healthy throughout our lives.”

Ms Palumbo said brain research was essential to meeting the challenges posed by common disorders such as Parkinson’s, stroke, migraine and epilepsy.

“Research also helps us learn about hundreds of other rare disorders such as chronic fatigue, motor neurone disease, and encephalitis that affect the development and health of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and neuromuscular system,” she said.
