Ocean Heroes visit Geraldton for one-on-one lessons with Mid West kids with autism keen to learn to surf

The Mid West community will be jumping on board and into the water this year as Ocean Heroes visit Geraldton to offer kids on the spectrum regular surf experiences. As well as four days of fun-packed free surfing opportunities — the first event is on May 1 — there will be private 30-minute, one-on-one sessions from late April through to Geraldton’s winter months. The goal is to enhance the lives of those living with autism through surfing and bring new opportunities and activities to children’s lives. Ocean Heroes co-ordinator Luke Hallam said there was continued success with the Ocean Heroes’ regional events program in the Mid West and a positive pilot program for the Ocean Heroes Surf Experience program last October. “These sessions will provide the autism community of the Mid West to access the ocean regularly and build on social skills, physical and mental health, and develop confidence,” he said. Ocean Heroes have already shown more than 5000 people on the autism spectrum the surfing lifestyle in Western Australia. Regular surfing experiences can be had at the Surf Life Saving Club near Back Beach in Mahomets Flats. Surfboards, wetsuits and lifejackets are all provided by the surf instructors.
