Police call for peaceful Australia Day celebrations

Geraldton police say they will adopt a “firm but fair” approach during today’s Australia Day festivities.

Snr Sgt Matt Power said police would be out in force conducting foot, bicycle and vehicle patrols and antisocial behaviour would not be tolerated.

“Instances like the recently publicised fighting will not be tolerated and offenders will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

“There will be zero tolerance to alcohol in public spaces and $500 infringements will be issued without warnings along with move on notices.”

Snr Sgt Power said police were asking all members of the community to be mindful and respectful of others.

“The City of Greater Geraldton events team, WA Police and other stakeholders have the plans in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy and celebrate Australia Day,” he said.

Motorists are also reminded that Australia Day double demerits began on Thursday and will remain in place until the end of Sunday.
