Queen Elizabeth II commemoration and memorial at Geraldton Anglican Cathedral mourns death with prayer

Geraldton marked the death of Queen Elizabeth II with a special commemoration service at the local Anglican Cathedral on Tuesday night.

The cathedral opened its doors to the public to offer a service to mourn the death of the Queen.

About 60 community members joined in the commemoration and mourned the death of the 96-year-old monarch, some of whom had the chance to meet the Queen during her three visits to Geraldton.

The service began with a welcome from administrator of the Diocese of North West Australia the Ven. Paul Spackman. The new Dean of Geraldton Anglican Cathedral the Very Rev. Lachlan Edwards gave a speech to guests before the Boys Brigade flag procession as guests remained standing during a moment’s silence.

Mayor Shane Van Styn read a Bible passage and prayers and hymns rang through the cathedral.

Rev. Mike Welham said the Anglican Church held a small prayer service on the day of the Queen’s death, and held the commemoration service to offer the public the opportunity to process her passing in such a way.

“There were pre-recorded prayers from Anglican ministers from around our diocese around the North West,” he said.

“It was the whole diocese coming together to take part in this event even though there are a lot of kilometres between us.”
