Music lovers listen up — a fresh new music event is coming to Geraldton’s foreshore.

Regional Sounds is partnering with the Geraldton Local Drug Action Group (LDAG) to switch up the traditional music venue by transforming the iconic 50 cent swing deck next to Stow Gardens into a stage for Tunes on the Tree Deck — a series of music events with open mics and local and travelling performers.

Following on from the popularity of the Tea and Tunes event in 2022, Tunes on the Tree Deck is strictly alcohol and drug free, but good vibes will still be strong with the first event to be held Friday, February 28.

Audiences will be treated to local musician and opening act Nic Austin, an open mic set and a performance by Perth-based musician Ben Catley, who will be visiting Geraldton to run workshops for musicians over the weekend.

Arts development officer for Regional Sounds Sarah Hinton said people were typically moving away from the traditional pub music scene and this event was a great opportunity for emerging artists to come and showcase their talent.

“Feedback from the community has been that people are seeking new musical experiences outside of the traditional live music venue,” she said.

“Having an open mic set as part of the program will bring a little frivolity to the night and also gives emerging musicians an opportunity to perform in front of a supportive audience without having to have enough material for a whole set.”

Audiences are encouraged to bring along a picnic or grab food from local takeaways and will be treated to alcohol-free fruity drinks by the LDAG team to help make the event safe and inclusive for all music lovers.

The event will run from 5pm to 7.30pm and tickets can be bought via the Humanitix website.
