Scott stars for Sharks colts

Great Northern Football League product Chris Scott was named best on ground after East Fremantle colts thrashed Claremont in the WAFL grand final at Domain Stadium.

Three GNFL colts players were selected to play in the WAFL grand final for the Sharks, who claimed victory 12.5 (77) to the Tigers’ 2.11 (23).

Rovers colts player Chris Scott received the Mel Whinnen Medal.

He had 21 disposals and 10 marks.

Teammate Dwayne Nevill had five disposals and five tackles playing in the back line.

Railways colts player Jy Stone had 12 disposals and a goal for the game.

East Fremantle football operations manager Darryn Fry said the team came away with a convincing win after playing well every quarter.

“The boys set the tone early, winning the first three goals on the board before Claremont could even score,” he said.

“We were really fierce attacking the ball and our defence was outstanding, repelling multiple forward attempts from Claremont.”

In the second quarter, the Sharks continued to take advantage of possessions, winning stoppages easily, which Fry credited to a strong back line featuring some of the GNFL players. “Jy Stone was really good for us down back and Dwayne Nevill, whose trademark is his pressure and tackling,” Fry said.

Claremont came back hard in the third quarter with a high number of repeat inside 50s, but couldn’t get the job done, kicking five behinds in a row. Chris Scott was the team’s highest possession winner in defence.

“Chris took a number of intercept marks,” Fry said.

“He reads the game really well and knows how to position himself defensively. He reads the ball so well and finds himself winning a lot of possessions because of that skill.”

The Sharks had 22 players selected to play in the WAFL through-out the year from all three grades.

“We’re really proud of our relationship with the GNFL and Mid West Academy of Sport,” Fry said. “The boys who are coming down to play for us are far better prepared now and there’s outstanding talent up there.”
