Shane Van Styn: Revenge in the boxing ring is ‘Stone Cold’ personal for Geraldton mayor
Geraldton’s fightin’ mayor, Shane ‘Stone Cold’ Van Styn, is set to be back in the ring.
And this time it’s personal.
Van Styn said he will be travelling to Kalgoorlie to take on giant slugger Tomoana ‘Wrecker’ Wijohn in a rematch of their April fight, when Wijohn took the Geraldton super heavyweight belt back home with him following a decision win in the mayor’s ring debut.
Making the occasion even more meaningful, Van Styn said his mother, Cheryl, has been recovering from cancer surgery and may not be able to travel for the fight - all the more reason to get the win after he suffered his first defeat with her in attendance.
“We’re going to get the Geraldton title back and they’ve put the Kalgoorlie title on the line too,” he said.
“I know what I’m up for now, I’m going to come in about 10kg lighter and the excitement of the first fight won’t be there, so I think I’m a good chance of getting revenge.”
Coach Paul Barrett will be in Van Styn’s corner along with experienced local boxer Kelly Crocos as second.
