Snapshot in Time: The legacy of council and community stalwart, former Geraldton mayor Phillip Cooper

A man of great commitment and tireless service to the City of Geraldton, Phillip Cooper was an outstanding exemplar for future Geraldton mayors. He was a figure who earned a well-deserved place among the most celebrated of Geraldton’s luminaries. Starting his service as a councillor in 1963, Mr Cooper went on to serve as mayor of the Town of Geraldton between 1982 to 1988. He then returned to the role as mayor of the City of Geraldton from 1994 to 2001. He was an integral part of some of Geraldton’s seminal projects including the removal of the old railway line to allow for the development of Foreshore Drive, the establishment of the Geraldton Regional Library and the building of the Geraldton Aquatic Centre, now known as the Aquarena. As acknowledgement of his 32 years in local government, Mr Cooper was named a Freeman of the City in 2001. A former businessman and stalwart supporter of sporting clubs and charitable organisations, Mr Cooper was a much revered and respected member of his community. In 2021, he proudly swore in his son Steve Cooper as a councillor. Mr Cooper died on July 10 this year at the age of 95. Snapshots is an initiative of the Geraldton Regional Library.
