We’ve expressed our love for Spacey Jane on numerous occasions, so when we heard they were dropping a new single this week, we had to give it a spin.

Lunchtime follows June release, Lots of Nothing, and is the second single following their debut smash hit album Sunlight. Spacey Jane is a local success story, with half the band — singer/guitarist Caleb Harper and drummer Kieran Lama — hailing from Geraldton.

At time of writing, about nine hours after release, Spacey’s new song already had more than 3.4 million plays on Spotify.

It shares cover art with Lots of Nothing, a black background with a window looking to the landscape, but that’s where the similarities end. Lunchtime is a fun, bubbly track reminiscent of some of their earlier and most popular releases, like Feeding the Family and Good For You.

Bassist Peppa Lane really carries the bounciness with her backing vocals. The way she bounces off frontman Harper is sure to be a big moment when they play live, which they did at RAC Arena the night of release.

In true Spacey style, the lyrics carry a certain emotional weight — “A permanent maybe, it’s probably gonna be a no” — but it doesn’t bring the song down. It’d fit in perfectly on your next beach trip.

The tune was recorded by the same WA engineer, Dave Parkin, who recorded Sunlight, but it was mixed by Grammy winning producer Rich Costey, who’s produced for rock royalty such as Audioslave, Foo Fighters and Rage Against The Machine, to name a few.

It wouldn’t be a wild guess to say this is a taste of a follow-up album. What that is, only time will tell, but here’s hoping they strike while the iron’s hot.
