Stage one of Walkaway Primary School’s new playground designed by years 5 and 6 students launched on Friday

A newly built primary school playground was launched on Friday after being designed and customised in part by the students who will use it on a daily basis. Due to old and out-of-fashion equipment at Walkaway Primary School, the P&C decided it was time for an upgrade and organised a brand new playground. The P&C raised funds for the construction of the playground, a large sum coming from the community crop donation from farmers in Walkaway. Walkaway P&C secretary Ina Carrick said the playground was designed in collaboration with years 5 and 6 students who helped in planning and design. “The old playground was very dated and really not accommodating the kids’ current interests and desires,” she said. “To ensure current needs were met, the P&C collaborated closely with the senior students.” The wider Walkaway community were invited to view the new fun-station, with a sausage sizzle, cakes and hot drinks to celebrate the success. Ms Carrick said the upgrade was part of two stages, with stage B due next year and further fundraising events to occur. “We want an extension of the first one, kind of like two islands put together,” she said.
