Walkaway Primary School student Joss Kitcher has big plans to become a world-famous singing sensation, and she’s generating a fanbase locally by showing off her talent in Geraldton.

The 10-year-old has so far sung for audiences at local nursing homes, won a Little Miss and Master Sunshine Pageant talent show, sung publicly in Byron Bay, and busked in Darwin and Victoria.

Joss performed at the Greenough Carols by Candlelight in December and said while the audience was about 300-strong, there was no stage fright in sight.

“I don’t get nervous at all,” she said.

“I like singing in front of people.”

Mother Gaynor said music had brought out the best in her daughter.

“When she stands up on stage, this big voice comes out and it’s always well received,” Mrs Kitcher said.

“She’s so shy and quiet usually but she just loves the stage.

“I want her to get into more formal music but I haven’t been pushing her.

“She started out in nursing homes, just to cheer up the residents at Christmas time.

“Then she won the Little Miss Sunshine Pageant’s talent show, and after that I thought ‘wow, maybe she should be singing to a larger audience’.”

“Just a few months ago, she was busking for an Aboriginal man named Clinton Pryor, who was completing a Walk of Justice from Perth to Canberra to protest the closure of Aboriginal communities.

“Joss raised $92 for him by busking and we managed to track him down and she met him.

“It was a great experience for her.”

Joss says she is a fan of contemporary artists Taylor Swift, 21 Pilots, Lukas Graham, Ed Sheeran, Justin Hawkins and Meghan Trainor.

The Year 5 student says aside from music, she enjoys climbing trees and learning karate.
