The 83rd anniversary of HMAS Sydney II sinking to be commemorated with sunset service at Geraldton memorial

The 83rd anniversary of Australia’s greatest naval tragedy — the sinking of HMAS Sydney II — will be marked with a sombre service at the Geraldton memorial next week. Hundreds are expected to converge on the memorial to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the World War II battle between the Sydney II and HSK Kormoran. A commemorative sunset service will take place on Tuesday November 19 at 5.45pm. City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said the WWII battle was an “integral part of the rich tapestry of Geraldton’s history”. “The memory of those who lost their lives continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of many in our community,” he said. “In keeping with tradition, we will come together with relatives of the fallen, as well as serving and retired naval personnel, to pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate price in defence of our country. “I urge everyone to join us at the memorial to remember this poignant moment from our past.” Commanding officer of HMAS Stirling Capt. Ken Burleigh will deliver the main address, while Glenys McDonald, director of Finding Sydney Foundation, will also speak. Local composer Tobi Williams’ Waiting, a piece of music about HMAS Sydney II, will be performed by the Geraldton Combined Senior High Schools Vocal Ensemble and Alida Wright. The Geraldton City Band and Batavia Coast Singers will also perform. A free shuttle bus service will leave the QEII Seniors and Community Centre carpark at 5.15pm before picking up passengers at the Geraldton City RSL and continuing on to the HMAS Sydney II Memorial. The bus will return to the QEII Centre via the Geraldton City RSL, leaving the memorial at 7pm. The Gummer Avenue carpark will be closed for this event.
