Two people fined after trying to take home more than 60 times the limit of molluscs from Geraldton beach

Two people have been fined after attempting to take home more than 60 times the legal limit of molluscs from a beach in Geraldton’s north. Miezhan Jiang, 54, and Chunxiang Hong, 58, in January this year were found to be in possession of 626 molluscs caught from Drummonds Point in Glenfield. The legal limit was 10 per person per day, meaning they were 606 over the limit. A member of the public reported the incident, and when authorities arrived the pair claimed they weren’t aware of the rules. In Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday, neither of the two appeared, but had previously entered endorsed pleas of guilty. The pair were both given mandatory fines of $6060 each, and also ordered to pay $550 each in extra fines. Magistrate Matthew Walton said the offending was of a serious nature, saying they “absurdly, almost comically” breached the limit. He said regardless of the value of the marine life, the pure number that was taken was “outrageous”. In court, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development emphasised the significance of the offence, and warned the fishing community offences like this would not be tolerated. In its submission, the department argued although the pair claimed to be unaware of the limits, there was an element of premeditation as they attended Drummonds Point at 7am during low tide. Mr Walton agreed with the prosecution’s submission, and adopted it into his remarks. He said in his verdict, the preservation of marine habitat was essential. “This grotesque abuse of one’s reasonable allocation of precious maritime resources deserves the strongest condemnation,” Mr Walton said.
