Western Power to install nesting platforms in Geraldton and Lancelin to protect osprey hawk populations

Western Power will donate a timber nesting platform to Menshed Geraldton to help support the protection of ospreys, after the first pole installed in Lancelin in 2019 helped nurture a nest of baby chicks. Two new nesting poles will be installed in Geraldton and Lancelin after healthy osprey chicks were discovered nesting on the first platform during recent monitoring. The timber poles will be donated to Menshed Geraldton and Lancelin District Community Association to become a safe and stable place for ospreys to build nests. Western Power executive manager of people Jo Christie said providing nesting platforms was part of Western Power’s commitment to protect native fauna and conserve the national environment. “Providing nesting platforms is increasingly important for supporting local osprey populations and these add to those already established across South West WA including in Bicton and South Perth,” she said. “These new nesting platforms complement other conservation initiatives we have done including installing 25 nesting boxes on infrastructure in the Perth and Peel regions, retaining 10 potential black cockatoo breeding trees within a proposed bushfire clearing area, and donating material to the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre in 2023. “We regularly undertake fauna surveys during the scoping phase of projects to identify the best environmental outcomes and support WA’s unique biodiversity while we undertake our work.”
