What I See with Peter Fiorenza: NBA’s Alex Ducas following in footsteps of local exports staying grounded

“You can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.” I became aware of this saying almost 40 years ago when the late Chris Mainwaring embarked on an VFL/AFL career with the West Coast Eagles. Chris was a loveable larrikin. In fact, I don’t know anyone who didn’t like him. Despite his prowess at sport and his popularity, he always had time for people and was genuinely interested. It wouldn’t matter where it was — here in Geraldton, on the beach in Kalbarri or somewhere in Perth, Chris would always take time out to say hello and have a chat. There were often times when he would see you before you would see him, tapping you on the shoulder. This was something that resonated with me, but I later discovered that this was not just limited to Chris. Today, we can list a great number of locals who have gone on to bigger things — not only sporting pursuits, although that is what I am more familiar with. Footballers Josh Kennedy and Harry Taylor are also good examples of people from our neck of the woods making it to the big time and still being pretty grounded. A couple of weeks ago I was up at Northampton broadcasting GNFL footy. During the half-time break, I noticed a big-framed individual with a familiar face walking across the oval. It was Alex Ducas, a Geraldton boy who has recently been drafted to Oklahoma City in the National Basketball Association in the US. He was with friends and family, watching a mate who was playing. Alex has been away in America for five years involved in college basketball and is a student at the famed St Mary’s in California. College basketball is a big deal — thousands watch and follow and Alex was a star of the league, dealing with fans on weekly and even a daily basis. This season he’ll be taking an even bigger step into the world of one of the most followed sporting competitions on earth: the NBA. So being able to come and relax with friends at a local footy match in Northampton would have been a real treat for him. Alex mixed and chatted with everyone. Even me. I yelled out to him and his mate Tom. “Hey big fella!” He looked my way and wasted no time coming over and saying g’day. And like Chris Mainwaring, he seemed to be really keen to have a chat with me and those around me too. He told us how he just enjoyed being back home and realising all the love there was for him and the career he was forging. I asked about a radio chat the next day. “Mate, anything you want,” he said with a smile. We had the radio chat and we laughed and joked and talked about exciting times ahead.
