Whooping cough cases reach Mid West as State grapples with surge, experts call for children to be vaccinated

Cases of whooping cough in the Mid West have increased by 1600 per cent as the State deals with a surge in infections. According to the Department of Health’s notifiable infectious disease dashboard, 52 cases of pertussis have been detected in the Mid West so far this year, up from three last year. Of the regional areas, the Mid West ranked fourth for the highest numbers of cases, with the South West (210), Kimberley (65), and Goldfields (63) recording more cases. Whooping cough is caused by a bacterium which settles in the nose, throat and other parts of the respiratory tract, causing severe coughing attacks. If untreated, it can be fatal. In WA, 825 cases have been reported so far this year, up from 78 cases last year. It has prompted calls from researchers to get children vaccinated, with reduced jab numbers believed to be the cause of an increase in infections. Dr Ushma Wadia, consultant paediatrician in the department of infectious diseases at Perth Children’s Hospital and a senior research fellow at The Kids Research Institute Australia’s vaccine trials group, said the main driver of this year’s sharp increase in cases was delayed or reduced vaccine uptake. “There has been a decrease in the proportion of children that are vaccinated on time, with a recent report on vaccination coverage showing a decrease to 83.5 per cent in the last quarter of 2023 compared to 90.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2020,” Dr Wadia said. “Vaccination remains the single most effective strategy to prevent pertussis . . . amidst this epidemic. “It is important to ensure boosters are given on time and not delayed, (and) timely vaccination of school-aged adolescents (their Year 7 booster).” School-aged children generally receive a combined vaccination which immunises them against tetanus, diptheria, and whooping cough. It is recommended that children receive their immunisations at two, four, six and 18 months, age four, and between ages 11 and 13.
