A man has suffered serious burns injuries after an LPG gas bottle exploded at an apartment block in western Sydney.

Paramedics rushed the man, aged in his 30s, to Royal North Shore Hospital with serious burns injuries to his legs, arms and face, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told NewsWire on Thursday.

The explosion hit an apartment on Meredith Street in Bankstown, about 20km west of the CBD.

Firefighters received a call out to the job just after 3pm, NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said, on reports the unit was on fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the man on the ground after he had jumped or fallen two storeys and a fire was burning on the apartment balcony.

Superintendent Dewberry said an LPG gas bottle had ignited to cause the mayhem.

He said the occupant of the apartment was severely burned and firefighters provided him with oxygen and poured water onto his burns until the paramedics arrived and took over treatment.
