A man has undergone surgery after he was knocked unconscious before he was robbed in a horror assault in Melbourne’s CBD.

Investigators were told a 37-year-old Bentleigh East man was walking by himself along King St about 2.20am on October 25.

Police say a group of three men approached the 37-year-old, with one punching him in the head.

The man fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

The other two men then went through the victim’s pockets and stole his wallet, phone and car keys before they fled the scene, according to police.

They were last seen heading west on Flinders Lane towards Spencer St.

The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after nearby security staff went over to help him.

The 37-year-old has since undergone surgery following the assault.

Investigators have released CCTV footage of three men they believe may be able to assist with inquiries.

Anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
