Art attack on City’s bollards

A series of 20 designs by local artists has been chosen to decorate bollards throughout the Geraldton CBD as part of the Bollard Art Project.

Eighteen winners were announced last Wednesday night at Queens Park Theatre, with the winning designs displayed around the foyer.

More than 60 designs were submitted, and City of Greater Geraldton Acting Mayor Neil McIlwaine said judges had a tough time picking the winners.

“We were blown away by the high calibre of art,” he said.

“Not only will this project brighten our CBD but it gives our local talented artists a prime location to showcase their work.

“Our public art pieces have always had very positive response from the community, so we knew this would have a great response.”

Artists were able to submit three designs that were maritime or marine-themed.

A panel of judges narrowed down the submissions, before the winning designs were selected by the Public Art Committee.

Councillor McIlwaine said the project was another way to revitalise the city centre.

“We have put a big emphasis on activating our CBD and making it a vibrant place to live, work and invest,” he said.

The bollard designs are expected to be installed by the end of October. The winning bollard designs can be viewed on the City of Greater Geraldton’s Facebook page.
