A motorist who allegedly did a burnout in peak hour traffic in Geraldton, causing his utility to spin until his rear tyres blew out, was more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit, say police.

The alleged incident happened on North West Coastal Highway, near Wonthella, at 4.47pm on Friday.

Police also allege that a short time earlier the man accelerated heavily on Place Road, causing his rear tyres to smoke to the point other road users could not see the road.

After the tyres blew out on North West Coastal Highway, the man allegedly drove down a side street and abandoned his vehicle, before entering a business premises nearby.

Police seized the car and took the man to Geraldton Police Station, where he allegedly gave a blood alcohol reading of 0.162.

A 35-year-old Karloo man has been charged with reckless driving and driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

He will appear before Geraldton Magistrate’s Court at a later date.
