Dozens of cars will set off from Towns Football club tomorrow morning as part of the annual Variety 4WD Getaway, in which teams will hit the road on a fundraising journey for Variety’s local children’s grants program.

With about 70 participants signed up, not one of them will have a clue as to where their final destination will be, as the weekend’s events, locations and fundraisers are all surprises.

Variety Midwest co-ordinator Jan Ajduk only gave away a few hints.

“So basically our teams have signed up to three days of mystery as we put the fun back into fundraising,” she said.

“We’ve been telling people we’re taking them on a 200km journey out west, which is actually out to sea, so I wonder how many people will work that one out.

“But really our four-wheel-drivers, who have themed cars, will hit the road for most of Friday. To keep them entertained we’ve got mystery boxes and quizzes, goodie bags and lots of activity stops along the way.

“We’ll be visiting some local schools and doing some grant presentations and some of our cars have also arranged their own little fundraising events along the way.

“As for the rest of the weekend, our final location will be jam-packed full of activities, from our Saturday night at Dracula’s Castle for dinner to the glam of the Var-Arias event on Saturday night. There’s going to be surprises and shocks at every turn.”

Funds raised on the journey will go towards supporting sick and disadvantaged children in the Mid West, with the 4WD Getaway one of the charity’s biggest annual events.

Fundraising began with the raffling of a 10kg Cadbury block at the event briefing last week, which raised about $1200.

Mrs Ajduk joked that the massive chocolate block could almost double as a surfboard for the winner, Alison Adams, who is a member of an ocean swim group.
