Free WA flags

Geraldton groups are being encouraged to make another addition to their flagpoles on Australia Day.

Local not-for-profit or community groups are being encouraged to contact State Members of Parliament to receive a free WA State flag.

The Geraldton Men’s Shed was among the first of recent applicants to receive the State flag.

Nationals Member for the Agricultural Region Martin Aldridge, who attended the flag drop-off in Geraldton, said the opportunity was little-known and he had only one or two inquiries a year.

“I want to get the word out that State Members of Parliament can supply flags to eligible groups, ” he said.

“Events on Australia Day often fly the Australian flag and the State flag is the perfect accompaniment.”

Community organisations include sporting clubs, Guides and Scouts, service clubs, voluntary support services, and exchange students and teachers travelling overseas.

Eligible not-for-profit groups also include schools, councils and churches.

While free flags are provided only to these groups, Mr Aldridge urged others to fly the flag on Australia Day.

“Eligible groups can access a flag through their local MP, so why not hold an Australia Day event and celebrate all that makes Australia the great country it is?” he said.
