Health day for women

Local Aboriginal women will have a safe place to learn and discuss personal health issues during a dedicated community health day tomorrow.

The Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service will hold its biannual Women’s Health Day at the GRAMS Rifle Range Road clinic.

The clinic will be closed for usual business and used to host the event, focusing on the health and wellbeing of local woman — especially those overdue for a check-up.

Access will be provided to health educators including advice on giving up smoking, breast health, heart checks, dental hygiene, emotional wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.

It will also feature on-site cooking demonstrations from local chef Portia Bodycoat, a healthy lunch, and face painting and colouring in for the kids.

GRAMS chief executive and Breast Cancer survivor Deborah Woods said the event was culturally supportive of Aboriginal women in Geraldton. “Our health services and information days are presented in a trusted and non-threatening environment for our community,” she said.
