Hurt, homesick Blue quits

Highly prized Railways recruit Dylan Wearmouth has left the club without a trace, and without informing any of the Railways staff or players before doing so.

He was a part of the Blues side that upset Brigades on May 24, though when his housemate returned home after work the next day, Wearmouth and all his belongings had disappeared.

It is believed Wearmouth, after socialising at the club on May 24, left early the next morning to catch a flight bound for Cairns, and had cited homesickness and family issues as his reason for returning.

In a blunt text message on May 27, Wearmouth said “I got a bit homesick and my knee is no good”.

“It has nothing to do with the club why I left. I had to come home for family reasons, but I probably went about it the wrong way.”

These messages were sent before he had made any effort to contact Railways. He had moved over from Port Douglas to join the Blues this year, after playing alongside Railways players in the Cairns league last season, though his sudden change of heart to return home has come as a blow to the club.

“It came as a real shock, especially the fact that he didn’t tell anyone and that’s what we’re really disappointed about, ” Railways president Dennis Gilleland said.

“It’s understandable he wanted to return home, but it seemed out of character to do it in this manner.”

Port Douglas coach Brad Cooper spoke on Wearmouth’s behalf.

“Due to a multitude of reasons he wasn’t enjoying his time, probably more as a result of his knee injury than anything else, ” he said.

“Weary beats to a different drum; he finds it hard to disappoint people and that’s how it’s ended up this way. “If it weren’t for his knee injury I dare say he would still be there.”

Wearmouth’s father (former Collingwood rover Ronnie) and brother have both moved to Port Douglas permanently, and it is more than likely a driving factor behind his return.
