Pets of all shapes and sizes will hit the streets this weekend as Geraldton residents get ready to take a stand against animal cruelty.

Led by the RSPCA Geraldton branch, dozens of pets and their owners will come together for the RSPCA Million Paws Walk on Sunday.

Meeting at Apex Memorial Park, the 20th annual walk is hoped to raise awareness and funds to support the local RSPCA inspector.

Registrations will open from 9am, but RSPCA Geraldton branch president Steve Duda said the event was open to more than just canine participants.

“I’ve been doing this event for over 10 years and in that time I’ve seen people walking cats, Shetland ponies, and even pushing their pet rabbits in a pram,” he said.

“We’ve certainly had some interesting pairs, so really everyone and anything is welcome to join in.”

The event is expected to continue through to St Georges Beach but will also include a pet parade, stalls and prizes throughout the day.

Mr Duda said while offering locals a day out and a bit of exercise, the main focus would be on supporting Geraldton’s RSPCA inspector.

“We only have one local inspector in Geraldton and surrounds and the work she has cut out for her is unbelievable,” he said.

“It’s important we’re there as a support and this is a chance for us to clearly say animal cruelty is not going to be accepted.”
