Paralympian guest speaker

Paralympian Brant Garvey has been announced as this year’s guest speaker for the Mid West Sports Awards.

Originally from Albany, Garvey developed a passion for sport at an early age and went on to compete in the men’s triathlon PT2 event at this year’s Paralympic Games in Rio.

Garvey said his sister being diagnosed with cancer was a major turning point in his life.

“The thing I noticed straight away was, even though she was only 14 years old, she never complained. She just got on with it,” he said.

“It really opened up my eyes into how powerful the human body and spirit can be, and really gave me some perspective on my situation.”

Garvey said he was excited about coming to Geraldton for the evening and sharing some of his experiences.

“Being a country boy from Albany, I’ve always found country people a lot more easygoing and genuine,” he said.

“Sport is a great way for people to connect in regional areas and its an awesome way to build new friendships.

“I’m looking forward to sharing some of my experiences and even having a bit of a laugh at my own expense.”

The awards ceremony will be on November 21 at the Queens Park Theatre.

Nominations are open until October 31 and can be submitted via: sue.785mwsf@gmail.com.
