Planting days to help grow greener city

The streets of Geraldton will be a little greener after the next two weekends, as the City launches a set of “community tree planting days”.

The planting days will take place at the corner of Swan Drive and Chapman Road this Saturday, from 10am to noon, and at Back Beach on June 18 from 2pm to 4pm.

Both sessions will be followed up by a free sausage sizzle for volunteers.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn said the planting days were a result of community consultations.

“In previous public consultations we asked the public what would make Greater Geraldton a better place to live and we found that having a green city was a top priority,” he said.

“We are now asking for people’s help in making this priority a reality by joining in our community tree planting days.”

Volunteers do not require gardening experience, but are encouraged to bring their own hat, gloves and hand-spade.

The tree planting program is being funded through the city, the National Landcare Program, the Green Army and WA’s Natural Resource Management program.
