Throughout November, a number of Geraldton police officers attempted to sprout moustaches — with varying degrees of success — as part of the annual Movember fundraiser for men’s health.

Almost a dozen hairy-faced police officers, and many more without the fuzz, continued their fundraising efforts on Monday afternoon, holding a sausage sizzle and raffle, as well as a tug-of-war and three-on-three basketball competition.

While windy conditions meant a planned bouncy castle had to sit the afternoon out, it was less of a deterrent for Geraldton community members, with more than 120 turning out to the event.

Clontarf Academy’s Johnny Narkle, Nathan McDonald and Michael Wright won the basketball competition from Senior Constable Michael Bickford, First Class Constable Glenn Wishart and the station’s Lachie McMath in the final.

It did not take long for the boys in blue to redeem themselves when they emerged victorious in a tug-of-war match with local firefighters.

Though genetics prevented First Class Constable Casey Patten from growing her own facial hair, nothing prevented her from helping out in any way she could.

“It was really good to see the community support the event and Movember Foundation, and the support from the businesses donating their prizes was fantastic,” she said.

“A few guys have gone above and beyond the traditional mo’, but honestly we’re probably all a bit relieved to see the back of them.”

The officer’s efforts raised almost $1500 in the afternoon, bringing their total to just over $1800.
