Geraldton Grammar School was alive with colour, dance and music recently as students dove in to a world of Chinese culture.

Over two days, primary and middle school students were treated to lessons by the University of Western Australia’s Confucius Institute as they celebrated their Chinese Cultural Day.

The Confucius Institute is a not-for-profit organisation based at UWA, aiming to strengthen cultural and educational ties between China and WA.

With its Chinese sister school in the Zhejiang province, Geraldton Grammar is already heavily involved in studying the Chinese culture and allowed a team from UWA to offer the two-day workshop.

Students were treated to an induction into the arts of fan-dancing and tai chi, before being awed by professional displays in both disciplines.

Each class then got to try out a few kung-fu moves, while others were taught to complete a fan-dancing routine.

The workshop will tie in with future community performances by Geraldton Grammar students as part of Harmony Day events.
