A woman who stole tools to sell for food after her Centrelink payments were cut off has been fined $800 and ordered to pay $549 reparation.

Phyllis Jean Little, 30, visited the Bolts-R-Us store on Place Road with her partner on May 20 and asked to obtain a quote for some products.

While they were unattended, Little pocketed a $549 compact impact wrench in her jacket, and left the store without paying for it.

In court last week, Little pleaded guilty to stealing and disobeying a summons.

Little’s defence counsel said a small fine would be the most appropriate punishment, given Little’s financial hardship.

Magistrate Donna Webb said the fine could not be a small one, as the theft was pre-meditated.

Little’s fines were discounted for her one night spent in custody.
