Tots allegedly found in car boot
Police in WA's Mid West have allegedly found two children under 18 months old unrestrained in the boot of a Nissan X-trail during a vehicle stop.
Sergeant Ross Gray of Perenjori police said the children were allegedly found lying next to each other asleep, wrapped up in the boot section, next to shopping bags and a rug, while the parents and grandparents were seated in the vehicle.
The car was stopped about 11pm yesterday on the Perenjori-Three Springs Road, near the Boundary Road turn-off, heading towards Morawa.
The car was being driven by the children's grandfather.
Sgt Gray described the incident as "totally unacceptable", particularly given five people had already died on WA roads this weekend.
"Through no fault of their own, they could have been in a rear-end collision and they wouldn't stand a chance," he said.
"Seat belts are there for a reason."
Sgt Gray said he was disappointed the adults did not seem overly concerned by the incident when challenged.
The driver was fined $600 and given eight demerits.
Double demerits are in place for the long weekend.
In other police news from the Mid West overnight, Dongara police last night impounded a car after a driver was stopped for allegedly speeding and drink driving.
Police allege the driver's licence was suspended three days earlier for drink driving.
He has also been charged with driving with a blood alcohol level in excess of 0.08.
