Volunteer is lauded
Helen Lumley was formally inducted into the Football West (Soccer) Hall of Fame WA last Saturday evening in Perth.
Lumley, who has given much to local soccer as an administrator, official and player, said she was humbled by the recognition.
“This ceremony only happens every four years,” she said.
“They had a lot of guests of honour and this year marked the 20th anniversary of the awards.
“It was great for me because I go back a long time and there was a lot of players being inducted for other awards on the night of which I personally know through having experiences with them.”
Lumley, who has always had a keen interest in soccer, began her involvement as a volunteer with the now-defunct Geraldton District Soccer Association in 1976.
Keen to expand her involvement beyond administration, Lumley was an integral part of the establishment of the Chapman Athletic Soccer Club’s women’s team in 1980, marking the first season of women’s soccer in Geraldton.
Over the years while playing, she has been involved heavily across several administration and treasurer roles at both association and club level, along with volunteering as a lineswoman for Midwest Soccer Association men’s fixtures.
Up until the end of this season, she was the oldest women’s player in the region, playing a sterling role as Athletic’s goalkeeper.
Naturally, Lumley has seen several changes during her time in soccer, with technology having revolutionised the role of sport administrators.
“I’m at an age now where I have played for 36 years and I’ve had my rewards and recognition,” she said.
“I’m ready to step down.”
With volunteers highly sought-after across all local sport, Lumley said she would encourage residents to approach their local soccer club committee and find out how they could get involved.
“If you love your sport, speak to your local committee,” she said.
“Show that you are interested, and if you know or admire someone involved, I recommend to speak with them and find out a little bit more about what is involved.
“Start as a committee member and see what goes on at a club and if then you want to take on a higher role ... well that comes with experience and knowledge.”
