Meekatharra Barndi Mayu Fashion Show a huge success, with more than 30 models from remote Mid West on catwalk

The Barndi Mayu (Good Kid) Community Fashion Show was a huge success, as more than 30 regional Mid West models took to the runway. Teenagers and youth in Meekatharra replaced their flip-flops for high heels on Saturday, October 26, flaunting their beauty and sparkle at the Meekatharra District High School fashion show. The outback town celebrated culture, fashion and community, as more than 120 people attended to watch more than 30 young teenagers and women proudly model an array of fashion styles. The community-led initiative was developed by the Meekatharra Community Working Group as part of Mission Australia’s Communities of Focus program. Participants joined wellbeing and cultural workshops in the lead-up to the event, as well as model training to prepare them for the runway, led by Noongar model Shannon McGuire from the Kirrikin Foundation. Meekatharra woman Timika King, a musician and representative for Communities of Focus, said she was proud of the participants. “I’m a performer and have been on stage heaps of times. I know how scary it can be to step out for the first time, but it also makes you feel so good,” she said.
