The best of the wet crowned at the 37th annual Far Western Championship in Shark Bay
The Shark Bay Speedway Club hosted the 36th annual Far Western Championship, with more than 60 drivers across eight categories throwing up the dirt over the weekend.
The championships see almost all categories of four-wheeled oval racing take to the track with hoping to claim the title of best in the West.
A field of 11 sprint cars was the headline act with Blake Jackson, who had been the quickest man throughout the weekend and maintained his dominance in the feature taking out the win ahead of Joel Ettridge by 0.536 seconds.
Jackson had qualified on the front row and burst away from the start, pumping in the fastest laps as the only man to be in the 15sec. for a good portion of the race.
Ettridge did slowly haul in the time gap but by the time he could consistently beat Jackson’s lap times there was not much race left as he had to settle for second to complete a Carnarvon 1-2.
Glenn Dickinson rounded out the podium, 3.5sec. off the lead.
Trent Lyall was similarly dominant in the street stocks sedans winning all of his heats before taking the 20-lap feature by 1.9sec. ahead of Luke Cutmore.
Lyall’s closest challenger had been Daniel Stanley who won two heats and finished runner-up to Lyall, but a poor start put him on the backfoot before mechanical issues officially ended his challenge on lap 17.
In the production sedans Barry Rose claimed the top spot ahead of Mitchell Baker by 1.43sec. in the 15-lap feature.
Rose had been trading best heat times with Mitchell’s brother Ashley but on the third and final heat, Ashley encountered mechanical issues which could not be rectified in time for the feature and did not make the start line.
Jacob Lathwell continued his good form on the ovals this year by dominating the new star junior sedans, finishing more than 5sec. clear of Samuel Tate with Charlie Scott completing the podium.
Tyler Scott won the top star junior sedans ahead of Jesse Hamon and Jake Leaman.
The big drama came on lap eight when Zak Turner Ella Ricetti and Vince Lindsay all got in a tangle with all three taken out of the race forcing a yellow but Scott was untroubled up front.
Brad Fitzgerald won the wingless sprints against Kyle Beard and James Bissaker. Shane Dubberlin smashed the modified sedans field by more than 8.5sec. after 15 laps. Kim Jolly, Adam Houston and Michael Ricettl all finished with 0.7sec. of each other in a thrilling battle for the minor placings.
Deven Edwards claimed victory in the small super mods field in the biggest margin of the night more than 12sec. ahead of Peter Newman.
