Wonthella Maroon were dominant in their Batavia League pennant grand final, claiming the title over defending champions Denison.

There was no doubt the two would meet in the grand final being the two dominant sides all year by some margin, but the finals series nearly saw an almighty upset.

Northampton, who had finished the season in fourth and last place, stunned Geraldton Blue in the first semifinal last Wednesday.

They had improved towards the back end of the season, but the Blues who upset Maroon in the last regular season round were heavy favourites.

But Northampton had saved their best until last with huge wins on rinks two and three with Geraldton picking up just one point by the barest of margins in a one-shot win on rink one.

In what was a preview of the grand final, Denison lost two rinks but still won the match thanks to a six-shot win on rink two which was enough to hold on for a three-shot win and direct entry to the grand final.

Maroon faced Northampton in the preliminary where the underdogs fell agonisingly short of continuing a fairytale run with a two-shot loss.

A tie on rink one and a two-shot win on rink three was outdone by a four-shot loss on rink two as Maroon avoided a shock exit and earned a rematch with Denison.

There Maroon gained revenge and then some from their semifinal loss dominating rink two 29-10 and three 25-16 to take the match by 28 shots and claim the title.

Denison also lost out in the second division to the minor premiers Geraldton Blue, who took the final 48-38 thanks to a 17-shot win on rink two.
