Millions of Aussies warned about heatwave conditions as humid storms continue to rage

Heatwave conditions are set to rage across the country, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing warnings for millions of Aussies across four different states.

Residents of NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia are being warned to prepare for severe heat in the coming days despite humid conditions driving thunderstorms and rain across the country.

In Western Australia, maximum temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 40s, with locals sweltering through overnight minimum temperatures in the mid to high 20s.

While these conditions have eased in the Kimberly, they are expected to shift west into the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions over the weekend.

The bureau advises that severe heatwaves are particularly dangerous for older people, children and those with medical conditions. They have said to seek shelter in a library, community centre or shopping centre if your home is unsuitable to weather the heat.

Storms are also set to batter the north west regions of the country.

The region stretching from WA’s Broome through to the Top End are expected to receive between 50mm and 100mm of rain are in the coming days.

In South Australia, the maximums are only slightly less severe - tipped to reach into the mid 30s to low 40s, combined with heatwave conditions particularly in the state’s north east around Moomba.

Those conditions are set to continue north into much of Queensland, with Brisbane and the Gold Coast experiencing heatwave conditions, becoming severe further inland. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach in the high 30s to low 40s, with sweaty overnight minimums reaching up to the low 30s.

On Sunday, Brisbane is looking at a high of 35c with showers.

On the east coast a region of low-pressure air is creating instability, bringing heavy rain across NSW and a risk of flash flooding.

Minor flood warnings have been issued for areas surround the Warrego, Paroo and Barwon rivers.

A large area of the coast from eastern Victoria through to the majority of NSW is set for severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening, including a risk of hail, damaging winds and heavy rainstorms.

Despite these rains, New South Wales is still experiencing heatwave warnings in its north east from Tamworth through to Moree and Lismore. In Sydney, Saturday temperatures are expected up to 33c and moving down to 24c on Monday.

A southerly wind is set to bring cooler temperatures to Victoria from Sunday with a predicted maximum of 20c down from Saturday’s high of 26c.
