NSW Environment Protection Authority investigates origins of mysterious ball shape objects on south coast

Mystery continues to surround the origins of strange ball-shaped objects which have continued to wash ashore NSW’s southern beaches. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) was notified following the discovery of ball-shaped debris on 1080 Beach and Pooles Beach at Mystery Bay near Narooma on the South Coast on December 11. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff were called after the balls had been reported to be spread across 200 metres of the beach and vary in size and shape. NPWS staff inspected nearby beaches and found about 20 debris balls only at Pooles Beach. Signs were put up in place to advise visitors of the contamination. The EPA also confirmed the discovery of the further debris balls discovered on six beaches near Dalmeny and Narooma between December 11 and 17, according to the ABC. The latest discovery comes months after mysterious balls first appeared at Coogee Beach before further sightings at Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Maroubra, Little Bay, Malabar, Frenchmans and Congwong beaches in October. The EPA determined after final testing the objects origin is a “likely source that releases mixed waste”. However, their exact origin remains a mystery, as no source samples were available for comparison. The EPA is awaiting results of testing on debris balls discovered on Kiama beaches in November and Silver Beach at Kurnell earlier this month.
