$2.7m hub big boost for training
A $2.7 million project at Durack Institute of Technology will include a refurbished library and improved facilities for training infrastructure.
It will become the “heart” of the Geraldton campus.
Training and Workforce Development Minister Liza Harvey said the Interactive Student Hub would make use of state-of-the-art technology to expand the existing student service areas.
Mrs Harvey said there would be improved access to the 24-hour computing facility, especially for people with disabilities, wireless internet access, and construction of an enclosed walkway which links the library and cafe.
“The hub will be a ‘one-stop shop’ for student advisory and support services, course and careers information, library and learning resource services, ” she said.
“It will provide space for private study, small- group activities, student and staff interactions in an informal setting.
“It will also offer opportunities for public access, enabling industry and the broader community to view and experience Durack’s contemporary learning environment.”
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the facility would add a new dimension to the learning facilities available in the Mid West.
“It will facilitate the connection between formal learning undertaken in classrooms and the informal, self-directed learning increasingly sought by students, ” he said.
“The new hub will allow the institute to enhance access to high-quality training and workforce development services, which recognise the needs of students and industry.
“This ensures local residents are equipped with the skills to get a job in the industries driving our economy.”
The project will be largely funded through the Royalties for Regions program.
