A motorist allegedly lost control of his car in Spalding last night, sliding into the path of heavy traffic on North West Coastal Highway.

Police said the incident happened about 7.20pm, as the man drove a Holden Commodore out of Green Street onto the highway.

It is alleged the driver accelerated heavily, causing the rear wheels to lose traction and the rear of the car to slide out into the path of other traffic.

An 18-year-old Drummond Cove man has been charged with reckless driving under hoon legislation.

His car was seized for 28 days and he will face Geraldton Magistrate's Court at a later date.
