Fire crews have contained a bushfire at Wicherina, east of Geraldton with around 12 emergency service workers still monitoring the blaze.

The fire, which started about three days ago, has burnt out nearly 900 hectares in a nature reserve.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services district officer coastal fire Gordon Purvis honoured the hard work of emergency volunteers.

“The community should take their hats off to the guys who have volunteered their time,” he said.

“The cool mornings helped us a little, but it was mainly the huge effort the guys have put in to get around this fire that’s contributed to controlling the situation.”

“The local council have also done a good job of containing the fire.”

Mr Purvis said the cause of the fire was still not known.

The fire has not caused any loss of property.

All roads in the surrounding area are now open.
