Foreshore 'bouncing' with activity

Gavin Box, GERALDTON GUARDIANGeraldton Guardian

A boy bounds along the Geraldton foreshore wearing "sky runners" or "kangaroo shoes".

A man, not to be outdone by children in his care on scooters, takes to the footpath on a castor board.

Further along, two men take to the beach with a metal detector to try their luck.

It's overcast today, but the foreshore is buzzing with activity.

City planners, when they sat down years ago to plan the new foreshore, hoped the big footpaths, large grassed areas and ocean frontage would bring people here and make it family-friendly.

Looks like it’s working.

Will Smith, 12, from Albany, is enjoying the holidays with his dad and twin brother as they go for a stroll.

Will has the advantage with the “sky runners” though.

The family bought them online and started using them about a week ago.

Already Will is looking like a pro.

Prospector Dave Laing, from Geraldton, is getting set up for an afternoon of detecting at the beach with a mate.

He’s been detecting for about 30 years now and often comes to the front beach on low tide.

“If I’m lucky I might find some jewellery, a bit of gold or coins,” he says.

“Might even find a watch.”

Over near the basketball court, a man who appears to be aged in his 30s or 40s, sits on a retaining wall near the footpath while getting his balance on a castor board.

He stands up, swivels his hips and the board snakes its way around the basketball court, then along the footpath with kids in tow.

Chalk one up for the older guys.

Who says kids have all the fun?
