Minister inspects $5.3m Geraldton health projects

Health Minister John Day visited Geraldton today to see construction of the new $4.1 million Mid West Cancer Centre and $1.2 million renal facilities.

Mr Day said the two projects would employ about 160 Geraldton tradespeople, plus apprentices and trainees.

Developed in partnership with the Federal Government, the new centre will increase the number of local chemotherapy chairs from five to seven, and provide purpose-built facilities for consultations and outpatient services.

Mr Day said construction of new renal consultation and education facilities would allow the Regional Renal Team to provide more support for patients and their families.

Construction of the cancer and renal centres is expected to be complete in October.

The State Government is also completing detailed design work on a $1.3 million Geraldton cancer hostel, which is expected to be open by the middle of next year.

The hostel will include seven double bedrooms with kitchens and ensuite bathrooms, plus a communal garden area.

“Once operational, these new facilities will enhance services and promote more responsive care for patients as they can be treated nearer to family and social networks,” Mr Day said.
